The Death of Henry II of France

Nostradamus´ prophecy that Henry II of France would receive a fatal wound was the prediction that catapulted the French Seer into the limelight of 16th century fame. The prophesied event seemingly came true in the spring of 1559 when Henry II entered into a jousting competition with the Comte de Montgomery, Captain of the Scottish Guard to entertain the guests at his daughter´s wedding to King Philip II of Spain.

The quatrain of Nostradamus reads:

Century 1 Quatrain 35

The young lion will overcome the older one,

On the field of combat in a single battle;

He will pierce his eyes through a golden cage,

Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death.”

At the time of his death Henry was 40 and in Montgomery was facing an opponent six year his junior. Also, both participants had lions on their shields which accounts for the opening line of the quatrain.

The “single battle” on the field of combat in the second line refers to the jousting match which ultimately caused the injury. As the participants passed each other, Montgomery´s joust passed through the slits of Henry´s headgear (the golden cage) and pierced him through the eye.

The court physician´s report read: “the brain had collided with the skull and had been concussed and shocked by it.” The infection spread from the wound in the eye and resulted in a large cerebral abscess. Henry died 11 days later after suffering paralysis, convulsions and respiratory problems – “Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death.”

After the accuracy of his prediction, Nostradamus was invited to read the astrological charts of the royal children by Henry´s widow Catherine d´Medici and he was thrust into the public eye from which he built a platform to become the all-seeing prophet he is still regarded as today.
